Share The Road

A.B.A.T.E Of Utah has been involved in Share the Road Program since approximately 1995. The starting members found the idea from an A.B.A.T.E. chapter in another State. This page is dedicated to Dixie Lee Laun who got me involved in the program and kept the program alive until approximately 2005. Dixie passed away in 2008.

Eric Stine                                                                                                                          Education Coordinator                                                                                                         ABATE of Utah

This program is sponsored by A.B.A.T.E. of Utah, and the Utah Highway Safety office.  We are riders who believe that safety is best improved by education for both riders and the motoring public.  We believe that sharing America’s roadways safely requires understanding and cooperation

                                  Objectives

  1. To encourage greater awareness on the part of the motoring public that motorcyclists are out there and in greater numbers.
  2. To acquaint you with motorcyclists, who they are and why they do what they do.
  3. To emphasize the need and importance for all of us to "Share the Road".

                         What is Share the Road?

Primarily our Instructors go into High Schools and teach Drivers Education Students how to Share the Road with Motorcycles. We show a tape called "A Common Road" put out by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. We then have a class discussion followed by a short quiz and a survey. The class runs approximately 45 minutes.

ABATE of Utah

July 2008 Thru July 2009 Annual Share the Road Report

The 2008 thru 2009 school year was very good for ABATE of Utah due in large part to our continuing relationship with the Utah Highway Safety Office and their funding, our program expanded greatly and we received excellent recognition. In our program we teach drivers education students motorcycle awareness techniques.

On October 7th 2008 we received an Award for Volunteer of the year at the Zero Fatalities Safety Summit from the Department of Public Safety for our past educational efforts. The UHSO paid for six ABATE members to attend the conference and accept the award on behalf of ABATE. In addition to receiving recognition it was a great opportunity for us to network with Public Safety Officials, Law Enforcement, Legislative Folks, as well as other individuals.

On April 27th 2009, we attended the Annual Drivers Education Instructors Conference for the third year. The UHSO committed to pay to send fifteen of us to run several breakout sessions and man a booth to network with the instructors and grow our program. Approximately 35 Drivers Ed Instructors saw the actual presentation we give to the students. UHSO also paid for 150 DVD’s that were developed to give to schools we are unable to cover with in-class instruction. We distributed 50 to 60 DVD’s as well as the complete packet given to the students. This conference exceeded our wildest dreams. We received requests for our program from 17 schools and have already done presentations in 5 of them.

From July 2008 to 2009 we taught 3850 Students in 134 classes at 17 schools, compared with June 6th 2006 to June 2007 when we educated approximately 542 students in three schools and held 22 classes.  And during the school year June 2005 to May 2006 when we were in only one school, OHS, and educated 347 students in ten classes. Clearly, with increased funding the number of students receiving ABATE of Utah’s Share the Road program can continue to grow significantly throughout the State as well as the other States the program is taught in.
.

The Utah Highway Safety Office, in addition to the above, provided thousands of dollars for classroom materials, Instructor DVD’s and guides, and numerous incentives for the students and the general public in order to promote motorcycle awareness.

ABATE of Utah and the UHSO also supported numerous booths to promote motorcycle awareness:

Weber Chapter supported a Morgellons Disease fundraiser in Ogden and made contact with several hundred people.  Morgellons is a very rare disease and very little is known about it.

By’s Report: The first day I arrived at the WIDOWMAKER hill climb to distribute Motorcycle Awareness information, the weather was overcast and looked like it going to rain, it did. I gave out approx. 50-60 stickers and pamphlets that day. The day was Friday, rainy and the first day of the climb. The big day at the WIDOWMAKER is Saturday, more people and the pro hill climbers. I gave out over 100 stickers, not as many pamphlets but loads of pens, key chains, and Chap Stick. The Chap Stick was a hit with the ladies. I ran completely out of key chains, they were a hit with the young children. I believe A.B.A.T.E. of UTAH reached out to one third of the crowd.
B-Y, CEO ABATE of UTAH.

Johns Report: On July 3rd & 4th Logan had the Cache Valley Cruisin.  This year Northern Chapter of Abate had a share the road both where we talked to police & sheriff personal about the Share the Road program. We talked to the military as well as the local search & rescue, we talked to people visiting from Texas, Oregon, California, Washington, Arizona, Montana, Colorado. They all liked what we are doing. We are invited back next year as well. We have been invited to two other car shows as well, one in Idaho and one in bountiful. We gave away all of our Share the road gifts along with over 500 suckers, 5lb of taffy and 2lb of tootsie rolls. I wish to thank all who helped with this event it was a long two days but well worth it. We also picked up a few new members.        Thanks Big John Lamb   (President Northern Chapter)

The Gold Wing Road Riders also attended the State Fair again. We donated enough pamphlets, brochures and incentives to cover 500 people.  We appreciate the GWRRA helping spread the motorcycle awareness message.

Currently we have 15 Certified Instructors and five learning the program. Without these folks this program would not have progressed to where it is. The countless hours our instructors volunteer is greatly appreciated. Anyone interested in become a volunteer may contact me @ (801) 391-4029
